Takaka Tiny Home self contained sleepout accommodation

Takaka Self Contained Sleepout Build

Completed

James, who works at the Takaka ITM store, wanted to build a self-contained sleepout in his front yard. After meeting with him and his wife on the weekend to discuss their needs, we started construction shortly after. They are stoked about the small private sleepout we created, with its own fenced-off deck area, which we got back to put a new concrete pad in their existing garage. We also made a new pathway to the main house on the property

Pohara Band Rotunda

Pōhara Band Rotunda Restoration

Completed

The Pohara Beach band rotunda had gone without maintenance for several years and, sitting right on the water’s edge, had taken a real beating from the harsh coastal environment. For a time, it was unclear whether the rotunda could be saved, or if demolition would be the only option.

Bay Wide Building was approached by the Golden Bay Heritage Society to assess the extent of repairs required. Following that assessment, it was decided to restore the structure.

We replaced sections of roof framing where timber was rotten or twisted, restored the steel posts supporting the roof, and repaired areas of the concrete base — including damage believed to have been caused by a vehicle impact many years ago. The rotunda was then repainted inside and out (excluding the roof), bringing the structure back to a clean, durable finish.

A local newspaper article on the restoration noted: “The work was completed to a very high standard.”

Comfortable Family Bach in Pōhara

Completed

We were approached by Ray and Stan in late 2023, who had purchased their property a few years prior and were staying there in their caravan for the holidays. After a couple of meetings and a few sketches, we had come up with a simple 151 M2 house design that met their needs. After nearly a year of planning, we started the construction in December 2024, and the project was fully completed in October 2025 in time for the holiday season.
For a new business completing its first build, Dan at Bay Wide Building delivered an excellent result. We didn’t just get a builder — we got true craftsmanship. The attention to detail and first-class workmanship were evident throughout, and the finished work was completed to a high standard. Communication improved as the project progressed, particularly as Dan established strong working relationships and rapport with fellow contractors. We would totally recommend Dan at Bay Wide Building and wish him every success for the future.

Beachside Repairs in Pōhara

Completed

After completing other projects on the street we were asked the owners of a neighboring property to help tidy up the look of this Octagonal shaped 2 story house, We removed the leaking and rusted Class fascia and gutter and installed new timber fascia and soffits while we were there we were able to do a few repairs on the cladding to prepare it for a fresh coat of paint, we also replaced all of the rusted steel fixings for the deck structure with stainless steel .

We own a two-storey beachside property at Pohara and recently needed to remove and replace several rusted components. Dan and his team at ‘Bay Wide Building’ did an excellent job removing guttering, soffits and Klass fascia, then installed new fascia and soffit lining – once ‘Contour Roofing’ had fitted new box guttering. Dan’s team also replaced rusted flashings at base of the upper deck, replacing the bottom two weather boards and patching the underlay in the process. Rusted joist hangers were also replaced.

Dan and his team were punctual, communicative, tidy and efficient, getting the job done in quick time whilst paying attention to detail.

We were initially quite stressed about how we could get this job done, especially as two layers of scaffolding were required, but Dan took it all in his stride and made the whole job seem easy.

Thanks Dan and your team for a great job, done at a reasonable cost. We would happily recommend your services to whoever may need building work done.

Deck and Reclad, Parapara

Completed

This renovation project involved strengthening the front framing of the house, recladding and insulating the external wall, and building a new Kwila deck.

The home owner, Colin Crampton, shared “Located on Parapara Beach, I have always imagined our whare being subservient to nature and the sea rather than the other way around.  When I had conceived my master plan my first job was to get new cladding on the whare and upgrade the deck.  Dan Burton had worked on the next door neighbours house and after a few chats Dan agreed to complete the work.  Dan is a very nice fellow and easy to work with.   Dan understood what the big idea was including how to manage the endless flow of sand coming off the beach onto the deck and other important details of the work. The finished product is what we both conceived and now I am delighted to get on with the final landscaping.

Ko Colin ahau
Kei Parapara ahau e noho ana.”

Renovated Bungalow

Completed 2014 for Peter Kelly and Shauna Mcclelland

“Dan Burton completed our post-earthquake renovation in 2014.  This involved re-piling part of our 1920s bungalow, removing a wall inserting a beam to create an open-plan kitchen/dining area and project managing the kitchen installation and all earthquake-related repairs.  Dan showed excellent organisational skills and workmanship.  He kept us well-informed throughout the project and involved us in all key decision-making.  He was constructive when dealing with problems that inevitably arise during this type of project and we regard his work as thorough and good value for money.  I would have no hesitation in recommending Dan and would happily use him again.” – Shauna McClelland

Shower renovation by Bay Wide Builders, Golden Bay

Bathroom Renovation

Completed April 2022

“ Dan helped us to replace our existing shower in April 2022. The brief we gave him was that we needed a bigger shower, using the same space we had, but we had a limited budget.

With Dans help, we were able to make an informed choice about which shower to purchase, and which supplier to get it from. The replacement was well coordinated and the job was quickly finished in just 3 days.

Working with our chosen plumber, Dan made sure he had everything ready so they could come in and do their job efficiently. We would hire Dan for any renovations in the future. He made the process flow well and communicated well throughout. “ – Rachel & Jeff Moffitt
